Hidden Barriers to Metabolic Control - Insulin manipulation amongst individuals with Type 1 diabetes
Health professionals in diabetes clinical settings should be alert to the prevalence and severity of insulin manipulation amongst individuals with type 1 diabetes. Results of a recent online survey conducted by Diabetes Australia – Vic indicate that insulin manipulation for weightloss purposes is highly prevalent and persistent amongst individuals with type 1 diabetes, with almost 40% of survey respondents having either skipped or restricted insulin doses as a means of losing weight. The survey also found that almost half (48.5 per cent) of those who skip their insulin intake, do so daily. Insulin manipulation for weightloss is classified as an inappropriate compensatory behaviour in the DSM-IV criteria for diagnosis of an eating disorder.
