Multicultural Resources Directory

The Victorian Multicultural Commission has released an important new resource to help people access services across Victoria. The easy-to-use directory lists the details for more than 1700 interfaith networks, language service providers, government agencies, chambers of commerce, consulates and community language schools and is available at libraries, community and information centres. It is important for people's health that they understand their medical conditions, and make informed decisions about their treatment.

GPs can use translated materials to help communicate with patients and to provide further information.

There are many places where GPs can quickly find reputable translated materials together with the English original.

Pharmacies need first to register by downloading the Pharmacies Application Form (click here). They will then receive a welcome pack.

Interpreter Alerts
The Interpreter Symbol can be displayed by health care services to prompt patients to ask for an interpreter if they need one. Order online. See www.voma.vic.gov.au.
 

The new Victorian Interpreter Card tells staff what language the patient speaks. It is available from agencies including Centrelink offices and Adult Multicultural Education Services offices. If you would like Interpreter Cards to distribute to your patients, please contact VOMA on 9208 3162 or email.

The Northern Migrant Resource Centre offers many programs assisting migrants and refugees to successfully settle in Australia.

Local community health
Darebin Community Health is a local community health services. Their website has details of allied health and other services.

Plenty Valley Community Health is the Division's other major community health service. Their website has details of allied health and other services.

The Transcultural Psychiatry Unit specialises in helping people of CALD background.
